Usage can be widely documented and I will use the BOS for one example.
"Followup is the preferred noun and adjective form, but the hyphenated form, follow-up remains acceptable. The verb form must be two words: follow up.
The patient did not return for followup.
In followup visits, she appeared to improve.
We will follow up with regular return visits."

noun and follow up when I use it as verb. I never use followup...but I'm no style expert..maybe someone else has a different answer?

follow up, verb. will be seen in follow up
follow-up, adj. seen in follow-up appointment
For short cuts I use:
