P
Papovaviridae — parakinetic

Papovaviridae (Pa·po·va·vi·ri·dae) (p[schwa]-po²v[schwa]-vir¢[ibreve]-de) the papovaviruses: a family of DNA viruses having a nonenveloped icosahedral virion 40 nm (polyomaviruses) or 55 nm (papillomaviruses) in diameter with 72 capsomers in skew arrangement. The genome consists of a single circular molecule of double-stranded DNA (MW 3–5 ´ 106, size 5 kbp for polyomaviruses and 8 kbp for papillomaviruses). Viruses contain five to seven structural proteins and are resistant to ether, acids, and heat. Replication and assembly occur in the nucleus; virions are released by cell destruction. Host range is generally narrow; transmission is by contact or by airborne particles, and many species are oncogenic. There are two genera, Papovavirus and Polyomavirus.

papovavirus (pa·po·va·vi·rus) (p[schwa]-po¢v[schwa]-vi²r[schwa]s) [from papilloma polyoma vacuolating agent (SV40) + virus] any virus of the family Papovaviridae.

lymphotropic papovavirus, (LPV) a polyomavirus originally isolated from a B-lymphoblastic cell line of an African green monkey; antigenically related viruses are widespread in primates and may infect humans.

Pappenheim's stain (Pap·pen·heim's stain) (pahp¢[schwa]n-h[imacr]mz) [Artur Pappenheim, German physician, 1870–1916] see under stain.

pappose (pap·pose) (pap¢[omacr]s) having a downy surface.

papular (pap·u·lar) (pap¢u-l[schwa]r) [L. papularis] consisting of, characterized by, or pertaining to a papule.

papulation (pap·u·la·tion) (pap²u-la¢sh[schwa]n) the production of papules.

papule (pap·ule) (pap¢[umacr]l) [L. papula] a small circumscribed, superficial, solid elevation of the skin less than 1 cm (0.5 cm according to some authorities) in diameter.

Gottron's papules, a cutaneous manifestation pathognomonic of dermatomyositis, consisting of flat-topped violaceous papules on the dorsal aspect of the interphalangeal joints of the hand, which develop central atrophy with hypopigmentation and telangiectasia; see also Gottron's sign (def. 1).. Called also Gottron's sign.

moist papule, mucous papule, condyloma latum.

painful piezogenic pedal papules, piezogenic p's.

pearly penile papules, numerous tiny white, dome-shaped asymptomatic angiofibromas occurring circumferentially around the penile coronal sulcus. Called also hirsutoid papillomas of penis.

piezogenic papules, transitory, noninflammatory, soft, sometimes painful, large papules appearing above the heel on the side of one or both feet, elicited by weight bearing associated with prolonged standing or running, and presumed to result from temporary herniation of fat tissue together with its blood vessels and nerves through connective tissue defects. They disappear when the pressure is removed. Called also painful fat herniation and painful piezogenic pedal p's.

prurigo papule, see prurigo.

split papules, fissured papular syphilides sometimes seen at the corners of the mouth.

papuloerythematous (pap·u·lo·er·y·the·ma·tous) (pap²u-lo-er²[schwa]-them¢[schwa]-t[schwa]s) marked by papules on an erythematous surface.

papuloid (pap·u·loid) (pap¢u-loid) resembling a papule; papular.

papulopustular (pap·u·lo·pus·tu·lar) (pap²u-lo-pus¢tu-l[schwa]r) characterized by the presence of papules and pustules.

papulosis (pap·u·lo·sis) (pap-u-lo¢sis) a state marked by the presence of multiple papules.

bowenoid papulosis, benign reddish brown papules occurring primarily on the genitalia, particularly the penis, in young adults; a viral etiology is suspected and the histologic features are those of squamous cell carcinoma in situ, identical to Bowen's disease.

lymphomatoid papulosis, a usually benign, self-healing, recurrent eruption of hemorrhagic papules, similar to acute lichenoid pityriasis (of which it may be a variant); lesions occur asynchronously primarily on the trunk and extremities and, after healing, either leave macular scars or form crusted scales or a central necrotic mass. Histologic features may suggest malignancy and include clusters of large mononuclear cells with dark-staining nuclei and large pale-staining histoid cells.

malignant atrophic papulosis, an often fatal disease occurring most often in men, characterized by endovasculitis of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and sometimes other organs, resulting in ischemic infarction of involved tissues. Cutaneous lesions occur in crops of erythematous papules that become umbilicated with characteristic porcelain-white centers with telangiectatic borders, many of which atrophy and leave white scars. Called also Degos' disease or syndrome.

papulosquamous (pap·u·lo·squa·mous) (pap²u-lo-squa¢m[schwa]s) both papular and scaly; used to denote a group of dermatoses so characterized, including psoriasis, pityriasis rosea, lichen planus, seborrheic dermatitis, and parapsoriasis.

papulovesicular (pap·u·lo·ve·sic·u·lar) (pap²u-lo-v[schwa]-sik¢u-l[schwa]r) characterized by the presence of papules and vesicles.

papyraceous (pap·y·ra·ceous) (pap²[ibreve]-ra¢sh[schwa]s) [L. papyraceus] like paper; chartaceous.

par- (par-) see para-.

para (para) (par¢[schwa]) [L. parere to bring forth, to bear] a woman who has produced viable young regardless of whether the child was living at birth. Used with Roman numerals to designate the number of pregnancies that have resulted in the birth of viable offspring, as para 0 (none—nullipara), para I (one—primipara), para II (two—secundipara), para III (three—tripara), para IV (four—quadripara), etc. Since the number indicates how many pregnancies, a multiple birth counts as just one in the calculation. Symbol P. Cf. gravida.
