spaces on MS Word

Does anyone know how to insert just a space when MS word is in that mode when it replaces words as you type?

take your document out of "replace" mode (insert mode), put in the space, and go back to "replace" mode.

"insert" turns it on and off. nmt
I have to hit the "insert" button to stop it. (nm)
