I was, therefore, able to get complete evacuation, and when the skin lay down flat, he actually is left with a depression on this side from the molding of the temporal bone that this has accomplished over the previous decades.

Is lay correct here? Thanks.

It should be either "when the skin lies down flat" (without any help - lies down naturally, all by itself), or "when the skin is laid down flat" (the patient or the doc does it). However, since he later says 'is left with a depression' it's better to keep your verb tenses consistent (when the skin is laid down flat he actually is left with...)
